Welcome to Haque Academy Primary School (Grades 1 – 3), where we believe our students learn best when they are actively involved in authentic learning experiences across all the curriculum areas. Therefore Haque Academy uses the Integrated Curriculum (I.C.) approach for grades 1 – 3. The I. C. approach is often when three or more subject areas are integrated in the study of a topic and the unit ends with an integrated culminating activity. Units of several weeks’ duration may emerge from this process.
For example, in a unit entitled ” Keeping Healthy” students of grade 2 might classify foods into food groups, maintain a food diary, plan a healthy menu, conduct a survey to determine popular and unpopular foods and carry out a school wide awareness campaign about healthy eating habits.
Through the Integrated Curriculum Approach, we endeavor to provide opportunities for our students to develop understandings of essential concepts, skills, knowledge and attitudes that will enable them to develop confidence in their own abilities, think for themselves, question, express their opinions and respect the opinions of others.
Within the primary years we have a very strong emphasis on Language Arts and Mathematics. Our language arts program is designed to help students acquire the ability to write and speak well and to examine, process and use information gained through listening and reading. Problem solving, critical thinking and mathematical computation skills are strengthened through our balanced educational approach. In addition to the core language and math program, the primary school curriculum for grades 1 – 3 includes Science, Social Studies, Urdu, Art, Music, Computers, Physical Education, SPARC, and library skills. The day reflects a balance of large group and small group activities.
A wide variety of teaching and learning strategies that encourage students to be actively engaged in their learning are used:
- Use of concrete-pictorial-abstract approaches in the teaching of Mathematics.
- Literature Circles for English language classes;
- Creative writing curriculum units (poetry, drama, fiction, narrative, informational)
- Inquiry-based approach
- Differentiated instruction;
- Cooperative learning and group work;
Personal Social Development
Haque Academy believes that sound education not only involves the development of the intellectual and physical but also the social, emotional aspects of a student’s life. This is why Haque Academy offers a personal social development program for grades 2- 5 which facilitates the development of character traits and social and emotional competencies through weekly classroom lessons. Lessons are designed to teach children respect, responsibility, honesty, compassion and fairness.
Parenting workshops are offered throughout the school year and counselors are available to meet with parents on an individual basis.
Assessment and Achievement
Each student’s achievements are continually assessed. Teachers use a variety of assessment techniques including testing for knowledge and skills, observations, rubrics and student’s work. Attitude, learning skills, social relationships and effort are considered equally important when looking at the overall development of the child. Detailed descriptive reports are given to parents four times a year and parent/teacher conferences are also held to discuss each student’s social and academic progress.
With limited time and resources, continuing professional development can be one of the most challenging tasks that faces the teacher. Nonetheless, at HA we consider this to be one of the most important things a teacher can do. Acknowledging this, we provide weekly, in-service professional development which can help teachers keep up with issues and current trends in education and also provide opportunity to learn other skills as well. Our teachers also attend online and face to face workshops and professional development sessions conducted by external teacher development organizations.
At Haque Academy, we believe that all children deserve a fair chance to succeed. Studies have shown that early detection of learning difficulties and getting children the necessary help in a timely manner can be key to a child’s future success in school. With this goal in mind, in collaboration with READ, Haque Academy has established a remedial department within the school premise, which caters to struggling learners through a pullout programme, within school hours.
